Welcome to The Harbour Centre, our specialist provision at The Hythe Community Primary School.
At The Harbour Centre, we believe that every child is unique, valued and capable of achieving great things. We are a warm, welcoming and caring community where children are encouraged to be themselves, develop their confidence and enjoy learning.
Everything we do is rooted in our school vision, “Learning for Life”, and our values of Include, Inspire and Invest.
Our Specialist Provision
The Harbour Centre provides specialist support and education for children with additional needs.
Our provision includes:
- Key Stage 1 (Years R–2): up to 9 children with Autism
- Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6): up to 16 children with Autism
- Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6): up to 16 children with Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD)
All children who attend the Harbour Centre have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
We understand that choosing the right school and provision for your child is a very important decision. Our aim is to create an environment where children feel safe, understood, happy and ready to learn, while being supported to develop their independence and reach their individual potential.

Admissions
We understand that the admissions process can feel daunting, and we are committed to making it as clear as possible for families.
Applications for a place within our specialist provision are managed by the Surrey SEND Admissions Team, in consultation with your child’s EHCP Co-ordinator. Your child’s EHCP Co-ordinator will keep you informed and notify you of the outcome of your application.
Applications for both our Autism (ASD) and Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD) provisions are open to children who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Please read our Centre Admissions Information to help you decide if we may be an appropriate provision for your child.

Learning that is right for every child
No two children are the same, and we recognise that children learn in different ways.
We use a multi-sensory approach to learning, providing a variety of experiences and opportunities that help children engage with the curriculum in ways that work best for them.
Our Centre provides
- Specialist teaching of English, Mathematics and PSHE.
- Speech and Language Therapy: Surrey provides speech and language therapists and therapist assistants on site during each week. Our trained staff also provides further speech and language interventions.
- Social and Emotional Support: Zones of Regulation is used to support pupils' understanding of their emotions and those of others. Part of this approach involves teaching pupils which tools and strategies support them in managing their emotions.
- Occupational and Physio Therapies: Activities and exercises detailed in a child’s EHCP are carried out during the school day. Additional OT activities are planned in class.
Our smaller class sizes mean that children receive a higher level of support. We get to know each child well, celebrate their strengths and carefully monitor their progress. This enables us to adapt learning and support as their needs develop.
We want children to experience success, build confidence and develop a love of learning. We also place a strong emphasis on developing the skills, communication, independence and resilience that will help them throughout their lives.
Being part of our school community
Although the Harbour Centre provides specialist education, our children are very much part of The Hythe Community Primary School.
We believe that inclusion is about belonging and having opportunities to be part of school life. Wherever appropriate, our children join in with whole-school events, celebrations, activities and year-group experiences, as well as opportunities within mainstream classes. We aim for children to learn with their mainstream class for around 50% of their time in school. This is usually during the afternoon but we work closely with mainstream staff to tailor additional times when it would be beneficial for the children to be with their mainstream class.
We always consider each child's individual needs and make sure that the right support is in place so that these experiences are positive, enjoyable and meaningful.
